SUSTAIN

Introduced to Ballance customers in 2011 SustaiN is a unique nitrogen fertiliser containing AGROTAIN® nitrogen stabiliser, a coating that acts to reduce nitrogen loss from ammonia volatilisation.

How does it work?

When applied, it blocks urease enzyme activity. By doing this, the conversion rate of urea to ammonium is reduced, enabling more nitrogen to be available for plant uptake and production.

Who should use it?

SustaiN can be used year round for nitrogen application to pasture and crop. It is the preference to urea unless 5-10 mm of rainfall can be guaranteed within 8 hours of application. It is ideal for postemergence crop application where higher rates of nitrogen are used.

Why is it unique?

Studies by AgResearch have shown that in pastoral conditions, using SustaiN instead of urea will result in an average 50% reduction in volatilisation losses. This is consistent with 20 years’ worth of international research, supported by over 1,000 field trials and proven performance on New Zealand farms and in over 70 countries worldwide.

PHASEDN

PhaSedN is a unique formulation containing SustaiN, fine elemental sulphur and lime in one granule.

How does it work?

Applied in autumn PhaSedN helps grow more pasture on the shoulders of the season.

With more nitrogen available the SustaiN provides an immediate pasture boost, while the fine elemental sulphur is retained in the soil and slowly releases to support early spring growth.

Who should use it?

Use on dairy and sheep and beef farms where there is a need for autumn nitrogen and sulphur. It is ideal where there is a high annual rainfall or high risk of sulphur loss.

PhaSedN Quick Start, containing both plant available sulphate of ammonia and slow release elemental sulphur, is a good choice for both immediate and longer term pasture growth.

Why is it unique?

PhaSedN contains a high proportion of fine elemental sulphur, which delivers a more rapid and efficient supply of sulphate sulphur to plants compared to other elemental sulphur products.

SPREADSMART

SpreadSmart™ is the future of aerial topdressing. It offers all the benefits of fixed wing topdressing, like economic efficiency and speed, with the accuracy and environmental protection of modern day precision agriculture systems.

How does it work?

SpreadSmart™ combines GPS guidance and tracking systems, with computerised farm mapping to automate the opening and closing the fertiliser hopper at the right time, in the right place, at the right rate.

Who should use it?

SpreadSmart™ is suitable for anyone who uses aerial topdressing and is looking for ways to lift productivity and take care of the environment.

Why is it unique?

SpreadSmart™ is available now, using proven soil testing methods and application strategies underpinned by science.

N-GURU

N-Guru™ is a decision support software tool designed to improve the efficiency of nitrogen use on New Zealand pastoral farms.

How does it work?

Used in conjunction with soil testing, N-Guru™ enables Ballance to interpret the results to identify which areas of a farm will produce a greater response to nitrogen than others.

Who should use it?

Anyone looking to apply their nitrogen fertiliser in the right place in the right amounts at the right time for minimal nutrient loss and maximum production. It’s a good tool to guide how to allocate the nitrogen budget for a season.

Why is it unique?

N-Guru™ enables Ballance to predict the pasture response to the nutrients accurately and impartially and tailor advice accordingly. It’s this interpretation ability which is novel, making the product exclusive to us.

FODDER BEET BLOCK

The Cattle Fodder Beet Block is a molasses block specifically formulated to help overcome phosphorus deficiency and balance other minerals like magnesium and essential trace elements that are lacking in cattle on a fodder beet diet.

How does it work?

The blocks are placed at the crop face under the fence and in front of the cows.

Who should use it?

Any farmer winter feeding fodder beet to their cattle to ensure they maximise their investment in fodder beet and support their cattle’s dietary requirements.

Why is it unique?

The Cattle Fodder Beet Block is the first of its kind on the market, convenient to use, and cattle like the taste. Traditionally farmers have dusted their crop with dicalcium phosphate or have used a slurry of the compound on silage or straw. However, these practices can be dusty, timeconsuming and wasteful, and the intake is variable.
